What to do if a hit-and-run driver causes an injury

On Behalf of | Jan 7, 2022 | Car Accidents |

Car accidents are traumatic experiences under the best of circumstances. The frustration level of accident victims only goes up when the other party flees the scene.

What should you do if a hit-and-run driver causes an injury?

Kentucky hit-and-run laws

Kentucky law requires drivers who cause an accident that results in injuries or property damage to stop and assist the other parties involved. Drivers who leave the scene of accidents may face criminal charges.

What to do after a hit-and-run accident

After you have checked everyone for injuries and called emergency medical services for anyone injured, write down as much information as you can about the vehicle and driver that left the scene. Include the license plate number, driver description, type of vehicle and anything else that the police could use to identify the vehicle. Call the police to report the accident. The police will usually attempt to locate the driver.

Insurance coverage for hit-and-run accidents

If you have uninsured motorist coverage, this coverage may pay for your injuries if the other driver remains unknown. Additionally, you may be able to use your collision coverage to pay for damage to your vehicle and your personal injury protection coverage to pay for your medical bills.

Hit-and-run drivers are often not identified by the police and often do not have insurance coverage anyway. Victims usually must rely on their own insurance coverage to pay for damages when hit-and-run drivers cause accidents. You may want to review your insurance policy with your insurance professional to confirm what your policy covers when hit-and-run accidents occur.
